This ultra-chic, yet casually sexy, resort seamlessly blends nature into the design, with open-air lobbies, al fresco dining and natural tones with earthy accents.
Location, location, location: Set on its own peninsula, just 10 minutes from the Cancun International Airport, Nizuc Resort & Spa is a quiet oasis far from the party-centric, thumping bass usually associated with Cancun. The ultra-chic, yet casually sexy, resort seamlessly blends nature into the design, with open-air lobbies, al fresco dining and natural tones with earthy accents.
Originally intended to be an Aman resort, the property has a decidedly Asian Zen quality that fuses beautifully with traditional Mexican seaside elements. The design of the resort incorporates the natural elements of fire and water, as guests will find stone fire pits and pools with lily pads and koi fish dotted throughout.
Though the resort is open to families, the resort drips romance, with black-stone infinity pools, private cabanas and deep soaking tubs in all the rooms. All suites at the resort feature private butler service and all exterior suites have private pools, gardens, decks as well as ocean and mangrove views. While there are three types of rooms to choose from, Nizuc prides itself on the 29 Garden Pool Villas. These private spaces each have their own tropical garden with an infinity pool and waterfall.
The most extravagant room is no doubt the Penthouse, located on the fifth floor of the residence area of the resort. This suite shows off gorgeous panoramic views of the water through floor-to-ceiling windows. A terrace opens up to an infinity pool and outdoor shower. For more modest, though equally well-appointed rooms, try one of the 44 ocean suites, scattered around the lobby area and just steps from the beach and main pool. Accommodations in this category are adults-only.
Nizuc puts a great emphasis on gourmet dining, which is showcased beautifully at its six restaurants. Three fine dining restaurants include Ramona, the signature Mexican restaurant; Terra Nostra for Mediterranean fare; and Indochine, which serves a fusion of Asian favourites. (Tip: The sushi is to die for.
Nizuc puts such a focus into its food that even its poolside menu, often overlooked by most resorts, is on par with its fine dining. The resort also has a Peruvian restaurant, Ni, open for lunch with an extensive ceviche menu. For breakfast, Cafe de la Playa has an elaborate and sumptuous breakfast buffet serving everything from traditional Mexican favourites to charcuterie, freshly baked breads, juices and omelettes.
One of the secrets of the property is the adults-only section of the resort. Here you will find a smaller, more intimate infinity pool with day beds and ocean views. The thatched-roof of La Punta Grill & Lounge allows for an open-air dining experience serving a menu of seafood and grilled meats. At night the scene gets sultry at Bar A-Kan the ocean view bar or Havana Lounge, a cigar lounge with a selection of rums and tequilas with a sunken patio that melts into an infinity pool.
The crown jewel of the resort is the Nizuc Spa by ESPA, the first ESPA branded spa on the Riviera Maya and only the second in all of Mexico. The 30,000-square-foot retreat is completely devoted to physical and spiritual healing. The menu offers a wide variety of Mayan-inspired therapies for signature treatments, such as the Mayan Cacao Massage and the Nizuc Renewal Treatment.
Facilities include nine multifunctional treatment rooms with showers, an Asian treatment room, two Private Spa Suites with pool and outdoor deck, a beauty salon, nail bar and private pedicure areas. There is also the Spa Cafe which serves fresh pressed juices and whole foods.
Though the resort is a perfect place to sit and be pampered, those who need a little something extra can find a wide variety of activities. Non-motorized sports include paddle boards, kayaks and snorkelling tours, along with shore diving. The resort is also near top golf courses and offers a ‘Kids Club’ for children as well. It looks like it may be time to reconsider Cancun and let Nizuc Resort & Spa take care of the rest.
