Hot dogs with mustard, all-dressed burgers and a slice of pizza (or two) are the unfortunate makeup of the menu that arises when rumbling stomachs approach the not-so culinary corner of Toronto’s Queen and Spadina. But that has just changed. Entrer alo – an upscale French restaurant, brought to you by Chef Patrick Kriss (Boulud, Splendido and Acadia) and Amanda Bradley (George, La Grenouillere).

Boldly placing itself directly above the corner’s très gallant Hero Burger in a former modelling agency, alo quite literally is bringing the area’s food scene to a whole new level. Boasting a five-course tasting menu that uses both seasonal and local ingredients – like Pemaquid oysters and Quebec Foie Gras – and a cocktail card that explores a modern look at the classics, the nouveau kid on the block seems to be starting strong.

For those not interested in diving right into the tasting world, Chef Kriss has smartly developed a snacks menu for Bar alo,the restaurant’s 20-seat section that features anything from pork belly to soft pretzels. That said, whether you’re coming from your ad firm with a potential new client or from Lululemon with a hot new pair of tights, alo has one rule that is applied throughout: No tablecloths. It seems the people behind alo haven’t entirely forgotten where they are after all. 163 Spadina Ave., 416-260-2222
